‘Doctor Strange’ Was Delayed By Five Months So Benedict Cumberbatch Could Star

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson revealed that the Marvel Studios film was delayed so Benedict Cumberbatch could play the titular role.

Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange introduced Benedict Cumberbatch to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fan-favorite actor was reportedly a consistent favorite when the creative team was searching for the right actor to portray the titular role. However, Benedict Cumberbatch was initially unable to accept the role due to his commitments to other projects.

Eventually, the filmmakers decided to push Doctor Strange back from its summer 2016 release date by five months in order to accommodate Benedict Cumberbatch’s schedule. Director Scott Derrickson discussed the release date shift in a post on his official Twitter account, in which he explained that the delay allowed the creative team to spend more time working on the script and figure out how to achieve the visuals.

Scott Derrickson is still attached to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as an executive producer, with Sam Raimi reportedly in talks to direct from a script written by Michael Waldron. The sequel will star Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, and Elizabeth Olsen.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 5, 2021.
